Does a diet without animal products improve mental health? Why can changing to plant based nutrition be so hard to sustain? And are people’s food ethics a symptom of eating disorder or neglected self care? Sabrina Louise, a vegan educator, consultant at Portland Community College, and ecstatic dance DJ, discusses how to transition away from eating animal products while avoiding common mistakes that can undermine health.

  2. Dear Will Hall,
I have solved the diet dilemma for my mental illness. I’ve been bipolar for more than 25 years. Over the years I’ve tried lots and lots of different diets including low carb, vegan, and gluten free. A little over a year ago I started the low oxalate diet. I did it because I had a kidney stone, but also I read that the low oxalate diet helps kids with autism. I figured if it helps them maybe it would help me. And it did! I am functioning so much better in so many ways it is hard to even explain. About 6 months into this diet I started thinking about reducing my psychiatric medications because I felt they were not needed (as much) anymore. After a year I must say that I feel the best I’ve ever felt in as long as I can remember. I expect to get even better the longer I follow this diet and I probably will follow it the rest of my life. I think the low oxalate diet could help a lot of mentally ill people. There is a place on the internet where you can get a 169 page list of the oxalate content of foods based on laboratory testing. (TryingLowOxalates). That is what I use.
